Senior Quincy Noble finishes with 21 points to lead UNT
DENTON, Texas (Feb. 23, 2023) – In a big matchup for seeding in C-USA standings, UNT used a 16-3 run late in the fourth quarter to pick up a 66-59 win over Charlotte Thursday night inside the Super Pit.
On Senior Night where four members of the women's basketball program were honored, the lone one participating in the contest had a strong performance as Quincy Noble finished with 21 points and five rebounds to improve UNT's record to 11-17 and 7-10 in C-USA play.
Along with Noble, three other players also finished in double figures as Tommisha Lampkin finished with 16 points, Breanna Davis had a career-high 11 points and Jordyn Carter added 10 points of her own.
With the win, UNT climbed into sixth place in the C-USA standings with two games remaining on the schedule.
The contest was closely contested early, with the largest lead of the first quarter for either team being just five points.
With the score 11-10, UNT swelled the lead to 17-12 as the Mean Green scored six of the final eight points of the period. All six points for UNT came from Carter.
The lead swelled to as large as seven for the Mean Green when Jaaucklyn Moore hit a layup to start the second quarter to make the score 19-12.
Charlotte battled back from there, however, scoring six straight points of their own to cut the deficit back down to one.
The two teams went into the locker room tightly contested, with UNT holding a 27-26 lead.
Trailing 39-37, Charlotte took their largest lead of the game with a 9-0 run to make the score 46-39 late in the third quarter.
The Mean Green answered with a 7-0 run of their own, with four points coming from Noble, to close the third quarter and open the fourth.
After the 49ers re-took the lead at 53-50 with 4:18 left to play, UNT scored 16 of the next 19 points of the game to take the lead for good.
In the 16-3 run, the Mean Green did a lot of damage from the free throw line as they went 9 for 10 from the stripe over the final 1:02 to seal the win.
As a team, UNT was able to take advantage in transition throughout the night with a 15-2 edge in fastbreak points as well as a 14-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
Lampkin led the way on the boards with eight rebounds while Davis had a team-high four assists. It was also Noble's 11th overall and third straight 20+ performance as she increased her season scoring average to 17.4 points per game on the year.
Quoting Coach Mitchell
"I thought that was a strong win over a really good team. Quincy played really well, took what they gave her, got to the line and knocked down free throws. I thought Bre Davis was huge for us tonight. From a game management standpoint, she did not look like a freshman in the fourth quarter. Misha only had two points at half time and finished with 16 so she was big for us in the second half from the standpoint of finishing. And I'll also mention Jasmyne Boles. She's not somebody that plays a ton for us but she was ready and came out tonight and made some really big plays for us. That's what you want this late in the season."
