HUMBLE, Texas - UNT fell just shy of tying its single-round scoring record set in its previous tournament in a scorching opening round and repeated the performance in the second round of the day at the ICON Invitational on Monday at the Golf Club of Houston.
The Mean Green enter Tuesday's final round in sixth place at 16-under par after shooting a pair of 8-under 280s in the first two rounds, and they have three golfers in the top-20 with Audrey Tan (8-under) in a tie for eighth and Ellie Roth and Shreya Pal (4-under) in a tie for 19th leading the way.
Tan had a pair of birdies in the opening round to go with an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole to shoot the first of her two 68s on the day and finished the second round with five birdies and a bogey. Pal birdied five of her final seven holes in the second round to shoot her second 2-under 70 of the day.
The 50th-ranked Mean Green enter Tuesday's final round ahead of six of the of the 12 teams in the field that are ranked in Golfstat's top-50 nationally. A strong final-round finish on Tuesday would present UNT with the opportunity to move up significantly in the national rankings and give itself more cushion in the conversation to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive season.
UNT will be paired on Tuesday with No. 43 NC State and No. 18 Oklahoma State for a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
