HUMBLE, Texas - Audrey Tan has made a habit of rewriting the UNT women's golf program record book, and on Tuesday at the Golf Club of Houston, she did it once again in emphatic fashion.
The graduate student, who has staked her claim as the program's all-time top player, bested her own 54-hole scoring record by four shots with a 13-under 203 and led the Mean Green to a new team 54-hole record with a 24-under 840, beating their previous mark set earlier this month by 11Â strokes. UNT, which entered the tournament ranked No. 50 nationally in the Golfstat poll, downed 10 top-45 teams and were beaten only by No. 10 Texas A&M, who the Mean Green defeated a few weeks ago at the UCF Challenge.
"I'm very proud of our play this week," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "I believe we prepared very well, even going back to the match we set up at UH back in January. We know this golf course well. We also picked up confidence in Orlando. We can compete against anyone in the nation. Golf is very mental, and we are showing great things from a mindset standpoint. It was great to have Mean Green spectators watching. It means a lot to the players to see fans cheering for them."
Tan shot a 68-68-67 behind 12 birdies and an eagle over the two-day event and finished tied for second place, ahead of 16 other top-100 players, including three in the top-20 nationally. She had just one bogey, which came in the second round. The Mean Green also got stellar performances from Ellie Roth, who finished 13th at 6-under par, and Shreya Pal, who also broke par for the tournament at 3-under to finish tied for 20th. Along with Tan, Roth and Sakura Sugiyama both broke par on Tuesday with 2-under 70s.
The Mean Green will now take a couple of weeks off from competition before heading to Tucson, Arizona, for the MountainView Collegiate on March 17-19.
