Women's Golf Sets New Program Scoring Record
2/6/2023 3:43:00 PM | Women's Golf
ORLANDO - The UNT women's golf team climbed five spots to a tie for seventh place on the leaderboard of the loaded UCF Challenge on Monday, thanks to a few rounds in the 60s and a hole-in-one from sophomore Sakura Sugiyama.
Sugiyama's 6-iron the 168-yard 11th hole marked the first tournament hole-in-one in head coach Michael Akers' career and set the Mean Green on a path to a new program record for single-round score, as their 9-under 279 bested the previous mark from the 2021 ICON Invitational by one shot.
To match Sugiyama's 3-under 69, Ellie Roth, Audrey Tan and Emilie Ricaud, who is competing as an individual, also fired 69s. Roth is tied for 25th - one shot back of Sugiyama at 2-under par, and Tan and Shreya Pal are tied for 32nd at 1-under par. UNT enters Tuesday's final round ahead of five of the 11 top-50 teams nationally and now has a chance to move up significantly in the rankings from its current spot of No. 56.
"I'm excited the way we bounced back today," Akers said. "In Round 1, we played lift, clean and place but today the ball was played as it lies. We are a very good ball striking team, so I think that benefited us. We had four players shoot 69 today, which is outstanding. Sakura's hole-in-one was on her second hole of the day and she did a great job managing the emotion on the following holes. We need to go into the final round stress-free and make birdies."
