Women’s Basketball Looks to Extend Win Streak Thursday at UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 8, 2023) – Coming off three consecutive three-point victories, UNT returns to the court looking to push the win streak to four games when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on UAB.

It will be the 18th all-time meeting between the two programs in a series that dates back to the 2000-01 season. The Blazers defeated the Mean Green 76-74 in Denton in the first matchup earlier this season.

UAB comes into the matchup looking to snap a four-game losing streak as they are 10-12 overall and 2-11 in C-USA play.

Each of the last four games for the Blazers have been close as they have all been decided by 10 points or less with an average deficit of only 5.8 points per game.

Quick Hitters

Senior Quincy Noble leads UNT offensively with 17.3 points per game this season, a figure that is second Conference USA. Noble has scored in double figures 20 times this season for North Texas and ranks ninth in program history with 1,169 points in her career at UNT.
Sophomores Kendall McGruder and Aniyah Johnson have been on a tear since the start of C-USA play. Both are averaging double figures in conference-only games with McGruder scoring 12.8 points per game and Johnson averaging 11.0 ppg.
Ereauna Hardaway ranks third in C-USA with a 1.6 assist-to-turnover ratio on the year. The freshman leads the Mean Green with 3.5 APG.
As a team, the Mean Green ranks third in league with 13.3 assist per game in conference-only games.
In C-USA matchups, UNT has two of the top 10 assist leaders in the league as Hardaway ranks sixth and sophomore Kendall McGruder sits in ninth in the conference in assists per game.
UNT has two of the best top blockers in C-USA this season in Tommisha Lampkin and Aniyah Johnson. Lampkin sits fifth in the league with 1.3 blocks per game while Johnson is eighth at 1.1 BPG.
In total, the Mean Green rank third in the conference with 3.8 blocks per game as a team.
After starting the 2023 calendar year with a 27-point, 10-rebound game against WKU, Aniyah Johnson has been a force for the Mean Green. Since the start of 2023, Johnson is averaging 11.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Johnson has scored in double figures six times in her collegiate career. All six have come since the calendar turned in January.
UNT has been very successful thus far this season in games against teams who have defeated them earlier in the season. In three opportunities this season, UNT holds a perfect 3-0 record in these games with wins over FIU, FAU and Rice.
Through 22 games this season, the rebound battle has been an indicator of success for UNT. The Mean Green are 5-10 this season when losing the team rebounding battle and are 4-2 when outrebounding their opponents.

Series History

UNT leads the all-time series with the Blazers 11-5 and had won each of the last four matchups prior to dropping the contest against the Blazers earlier this season.
Prior to the four-game win streak, UAB had a four-game stretch of wins of their own from 2018-20.
HC Jalie Mitchell is 7-5 all-time against UAB at UNT and holds a 4-2 record against the Blazers in Birmingham.

Battling the Blazers

UAB heads into the matchup at 10-12 overall and 2-11 in C-USA competition.
The Blazers have a pair of players averaging double figures thus far this season, including one of the top freshman in the conference in Denim DeShields.
Through 22 games of her collegiate career, DeShields is averaging 13.3 points and 4.7 assists per game. She ranks second in C-USA in assists and finished the game in Denton earlier this season with 16 points and seven assists.
UAB is one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the conference as well as Division I. The Blazers lead C-USA and rank 17th in the country with 8.5 made 3-pointers per game. They also have the top 3-point FG percentage shooter in the conference in Margaret Whitley (41.7 percent).
