Sophomore from Houston finishes indoor season ranked No. 16 nationally
DENTON, Texas – KeAyla Dove concluded the indoor season Saturday at the 2023 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., finishing No. 16 in the nation.
"I'm so incredibly proud of Key, and it's been amazing to watch her progression throughout the indoor season," head coach Doug Marshall said. "Definitely not the results we wanted or expected, but she earned a spot in the ring against the best in the country. That says a lot about the work that she has put in to get to this point. She will be back at the biggest stage. I know Coach (Jon) Tipton will tweak some things, and they will be back stronger than ever."
Dove fouled on her first three throws at the Albuquerque Convention Center, falling short of the final and just missing out on All-America honors. The sophomore from Houston, Texas, moves on to the outdoor season having ranked in the top 16 during the indoor season.
"Unfortunately and obviously today did not go how we wanted it to go, but the privilege of being here represents the hours of practice, the sacrifices made, and the perseverance of an amazing young woman," Tipton said. "This result does not define KeAyla, nor does it represent her body of work and what she is capable of. The road to being champion is paved with more learning moments than successes, and this is one of those opportunities that we will move forward from. It is always our pursuit to be better than we were yesterday and to compete with the person in the mirror, and that is what we must continue to do. We want to send a huge congratulations to those who performed well, and we want to lift those up who did not perform to their standards."
Dove's 2023 indoor season included raising the UNT women's shot put school record to 58-3.75 (17.77m), finishing as the Conference USA runner-up, and being named Conference USA Women's Field Athlete of the Week twice.
Next up for Dove and the Mean Green is the TCU Invitational next Friday and Saturday, March 17-18 in Fort Worth, Texas.
"We are excited to get back to the 940 and join our team as we look to improve this outdoor season," Tipton said. "We also want to send a huge thank you out to all the athletes, coaches, support staff, and administrators who made this season possible. Without each and every one of them, we would not be here representing North Texas on the National stage. Go Mean Green!"
