Mean Green looking to win first conference title since 1985-86
FRISCO, Texas (March 7, 2023) – Heading into the Conference USA Tournament as the #7 seed, UNT is set to take on #10 UAB Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 PM inside the Ford Center at the Star in the opening round looking to advance to the Quarterfinal round for the seventh consecutive season.
It will be the 19th all-time meeting between the two programs in a series that dates back to the 2000-01 season. The Blazers defeated the Mean Green twice this season, 76-74 in Denton and 61-52 in Birmingham.
It will be the second time UNT and UAB have squared off in a conference tournament matchup. The #8 Mean Green defeated the #9 Blazers 65-62 in the 2017 C-USA Tournament First Round in double overtime.
UNT advanced to the semifinal of the C-USA Tournament a season ago and hold a 4-1 record in C-USA first round matchups and are 9-4 in first round games all-time.
With a win, the Mean Green would advance to the quarterfinal round to take on Western Kentucky Thursday at 1:30 PM. The semifinal matchup would be Friday night at 7:00 PM with the title game coming at 4:30 PM Saturday afternoon.
UAB comes into the matchup with a 13-16 overall record and a 5-15 mark in conference play to earn the #10 seed in the tournament. The Blazers earned a dominant 83-75 win over Charlotte in their regular season finale and have won two of their last four contests after starting C-USA play 3-13.

- Senior guard Quincy Noble comes into the matchup as one of the top players in C-USA, third in the league with 17.1 points per game.
- In 30 games this season, Noble has scored in double figures 25 times and is eighth in program history with 1,302 points in her career at UNT.
- For the third time in her illustrious career in a UNT uniform, Noble earned All-Conference USA honors as she was named a First Team All-CUSA honoree.
- Noble becomes just the second player in program history, joining now head coach Jalie Mitchell, to be named to the All-Conference team three times in a career after being named to the First Team in 2020-21 and a Second Team selection in 2021-22.
- Coming into the contest, Noble needs just one 3-pointer to reach 150 made 3-pointers in her career (143 at UNT, 6 at UNM).
- Junior Tommisha Lampkin has been since being re-insterted into the starting lineup five games ago, scoring in double figures four times in those five games. The string started with a career performance with 29 points and 18 rebounds in the win over UTEP.
- Lampkin is shooting 61.9 percent from the floor this season. If the season ended today, that mark would be the third best in program history.
- UNT has started a freshman at PG in 28 of their 30 games this sesason with Breanna Davis making 10 starts and Ereauna Hardaway starting 18.
- Davis comes to UNT with a family pedigree. Davis' father, Chris, was selected to the UNT Hall of Fame in 2008.
- Hardaway, meanwhile, ranks eighth in C-USA with a 1.34 assist-to-turnover ratio on the year. The freshman leads the Mean Green with 3.1 APG.
- UNT has two of the top shot blockers in C-USA this season in Lampkin and Aniyah Johnson. Lampkin sits seventh in the league with 1.1 blocks per game while Johnson is eighth at 1.0 BPG.
- In total, the Mean Green rank third in the conference with 3.2 blocks per game as a team.
- Through 30 games this season, the rebound battle has been an indicator of success for UNT. The Mean Green are 5-15 this season when losing the team rebounding battle and are 5-3 when outrebounding their opponents.
- UNT has performed well against the top teams in CUSA this season. Four of UNT's eight wins in conference play this season have come against the teams that finished first through fourth in the standings.
- Down the stretch this season, UNT has had success when leading late in the game. When leading or tied with five minutes remaining in regulation, UNT is 10-3 overall.
- Head coach Jalie Mitchell has had success in the conference tournament throughout her career, both as a player and a coach. Of the 14 total conference tournament victories UNT has in program history, Mitchell has been a part of 10 of them.
- Nearly half (six) of UNT's tournament victories have come with Mitchell as the head coach while four more came when she was a player from 1998-2002
- UNT leads the all-time series with the Blazers 10-7 but has dropped back-to-back games this season, snapping a four-game win streak.

- The Blazers are led offensively by a strong backcourt of Denim DeShields and Margaret Whitley. DeShields leads UAB with 12.8 points per game while Whitely, a Second Team All-Conference selection, is inside the top-three in the league in FT percentage, 3-point FG percentage and 3-pointers per game.
- UAB leads the league with 13.9 assists per game as team and have also shot the ball well from beyond the arc all season, ranking inside the top-30 in DI in 3-pointers per game.
- Defensively, the Blazers are not keen on forcing turnovers as they rank 11th in the league in steals per game and 10th in turnovers forced.
