Stadfany rallies from down 5-2 in set three to clinch match win
DENTON, Texas (April 20, 2023) – After dropping the doubles point to open the match, UNT bounced back in a big way for a 4-1 win over UTEP to open the C-USA Tournament Thursday and advance to the C-USA Quarterfinals.
The Mean Green got wins at lines one, three, four and five in singles play to advance to the Quarterfinal for the 12th time in the last 13 tournaments. UNT will take on #3 Rice Friday at 10:00 AM for with a spot in the semifinal on the line.
Jasmine Adams, Olivia Malm, Kexuan Zhou and Nformi Stadfany all picked up singles victories to lead UNT to the win.
To start the day in doubles play, the combination of Stadfany and Malm picked up a strong 6-3 victory at line two to put UNT one match away from clinching the doubles point.
Unfortunately for the Mean Green, UTEP rallied for a 6-4 win at line one and took home a tiebreak win 7-6 (7-5) at line three to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
In singles competition, Adams gave UNT its first points of the day as she picked up a 6-2, 7-5 win in straight sets. It was the ninth line one victory for Adams and her first singles win since being injured in late February and missing nearly a month of match action.
Zhou was the next to grab a victory for the Mean Green as she won 6-4, 7-5 at line four to put UNT on top 2-0. She is now tied for the team lead with 11 singles wins in her final season in Denton.
All four of the other singles matches advanced to a third set with North Texas needing two more victories to clinch the match.
Playing at line three, Malm inched UNT another point closer as she rallied from down one set to none and dominated the third set to pick up a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win and make the score 3-1 in favor of the Mean Green.
With three matches all near completion, Stadfany had a comeback for the ages to win at line five and clinch the match. After winning set one 6-2 and dropping the second set 6-4, she found herself trailing 5-2 in the deciding third set. The freshman from Douala, Cameroon, won five straight games to take home a thrilling 7-5 victory and give UNT a 4-1 win.
With the victory, the Mean Green have now won at least one match in every tournament but one since joining C-USA in the 2013-14 academic year.
UNT will now try to advance to the semifinal of the tournament for the first time since 2019 when they take on the Owls Friday morning. Rice knocked off UNT 4-2 in Houston earlier this season, but the Mean Green were without four players for that matchup.
