DENTON - Celebratory champagne was flowing on Tuesday afternoon in the HUB Club of the newly named DATCU Stadium as UNT and DATCU administration, along with fans and dignitaries, celebrated the new naming rights deal for the Mean Green's 30,850-seat stadium that opened in 2011.
UNT Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley announced the naming rights deal was for 15 years with the long standing Denton credit union, which was originally founded in 1936 by UNT professors along with some other area educators, and said the match between the two entities is a perfect one.
"The heart of what we want to build here at UNT, it all really starts with a product that serves people," Mosley said. "We want to make sure that everything we do - the opportunities we choose to invest in, that they deliver significance and value back to everybody we serve. We want our student-athletes to feel that. We want our faculty and staff to feel that. Ultimately, we want our alumni to feel proud about their university and proud of the degree they hold."
DATCU president Melanie Vest spoke about working as a teller at the credit union while finishing up her UNT degree over 20 years ago and remembered her time as a Mean Green student fondly, though she never could have dreamed of being on the podium Tuesday announcing a naming rights deal between her credit union and her alma mater's football stadium.
"It might seem like a pretty straightforward partnership, we envision this to be something so much more," Vest said. "We wanted the opportunity to provide our financial expertise in the financial world, but not only that, also our experience as a long standing member of this community. We're so involved in education, nonprofits and building the next leaders for this community.
"On behalf of our over 200 employees and over 100,000 members and our board of directors, I just want to say how excited we are about what the future holds for all of us."
UNT President Neal Smatresk said the naming rights deal continues the momentum of what he called one of the best years in the history of the UNT Athletics Department and also recognized several city and area dignitaries in the audience.
"Today's a special day. It's a day I've been looking forward with an incredible sponsorship from an incredible organization," Smatresk said. "It's a partnership between two institutions that are bastions of this city. DATCU Stadium, doesn't that have a nice ring to it?"
Before a champagne toast, Mosley wrapped things up by praising DATCU for sharing the same values of the athletic department and entering the 15-year commitment.
"Our two organizations share such a rich history that we feel can unlock greater partnerships across our campus and providing first-class experiences and services to our faculty, staff and students," Mosley said. "We value three things, and you see them when you walk in our door each and every day. We value people in their growth, we value success and we value integrity. To have a partner come alongside us who represents these same qualities means so much, and we look forward to the years ahead as we work together to build champions and prepare leaders."
