DALLAS — The UNT men's basketball team's inaugural American Athletic Conference league slate was announced Friday by the conference office.
The reigning NIT champions will play its first AAC conference game on Jan. 4 at Wichita State and will conclude the 18-game schedule on March 9 with a trip to Rice. The Mean Green will split the 18 conference games with nine home and nine away. Its first home league game will be Jan. 6 versus Tulane.
Notable home conference games include a Jan. 25 matchup versus Metroplex rival SMU at the Super Pit, a Jan. 31 home game against UAB who North Texas defeated in the NIT championship game, a Feb. 15 home game versus Memphis who made the NCAA Tournament last year and a March 6 home contest versus Florida Atlantic who reached the Final Four a year ago and won the 2023 Conference USA championship.
The March 6 game against FAU will be the final home game of the regular season.
Similar to Florida Atlantic, UNT made the move to the American Athletic Conference this season after 10 seasons in CUSA where they won conference championships in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
The Mean Green elevated associate head coach Ross Hodge to head coach on April 2 after winning the NIT title. Hodge was North Texas' associate head coach for six seasons and has been the mastermind to its defense that led the nation in each of the last two years in fewest points allowed per game.
In addition to the 2023 NIT title, UNT won a program record 31 games a season ago and tied the program record for league wins with 16.
Along with its 18-game conference schedule, the Mean Green are still finalizing a non-conference portion. Notable out of conference games include playing in the 2023 Shriners Children's Hospital Charleston Classic from Nov. 16-19 where the Mean Green will face off against St. John's as well as either LSU or Dayton and one more opponent. UNT will travel to Boise State on Dec. 5 and to Brooklyn, New York to face Fordham on Dec. 10.
North Texas has finalized home games versus Omaha on Nov. 11 and Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 2.
The 2024 American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship begins March 13. The 14-team single elimination conference tournament will be hosted at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
