Laydner and Chalard win co-title at flight three singles highlight solid weekend
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The UNT tennis team hit the road for the first time this fall and came back with three flight titles and an impressive 19-8 overall record at the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana over the weekend.
Carolina Laydner and Lou Chalard both posted perfect 3-0 records to share the singles championship at flight three to highlight a strong performance for the Mean Green. UNT also brought home a title in doubles play as Shulzhenko and Lilly Schultz posted a 3-0 record to win flight two.
In addition, Stadfany Nformi and Schultz both placed second while Stanislava Shulzhenko and Marina Adati took home third place in their respective singles flights. I
"This was a great tournament and a chance to mix it up with teams we don't normally see in our season," head coach Amanda Stone said. "I think we raised our level against a strong field of competition and was proud of our flight winners and every player coming back with a winning record. We've been putting emphasis on hustle and high effort when battling in the points and that showed in our results."
In total, the Mean Green posted a 14-4 record in singles matches in the tournament with no player dropping more than one match.
Also in doubles play, Chalard and Adati teamed up to take home third place in flight three. UNT finished 5-4 in doubles action.
On the first day of competition, the Mean Green posted a perfect 6-0 record in singles play, highlighted by straight set wins from Shulzhenko, Laydner and Adati.
North Texas also got a 6-3 win from from Chalard and Adati in doubles play.
On day two, Nformi, Laydner, Chalard, Adati and Schultz all won their respective singles matches. The wins put at least one UNT player in the finals at lines two, three and six.
The final day of competition saw the Mean Green grab four singles victories, including wins by Chalard and Laydner at flight three that made them co-champions.
UNT will return to action Thursday when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the ITA Texas Regional hosted by TCU.
