Mean Green look for continued success in annual event
FT. WORTH – Coming off strong performances early in the fall season, the UNT tennis team heads to Fort Worth to compete in the annual ITA Texas Regional hosted by TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center this weekend.
The event, which begins Thursday, is compiled of the top players across the state of Texas all competing for a spot in the NCAA singles and doubles championships. Two singles finalists and the doubles champion from each reach will qualify.
A total of 112 singles players will be whittled down to the main draw of 64 after two rounds of qualifying on Thursday. Marina Adati, Lou Chalard, Carolina Laydner and Lilly Schultz will all play in Thursday's qualifying.
Singles competition for Gianna Pielet, Stadfany Nformi and Stanislava Shulzhenko, meanwhile, will begin Friday as they both were selected to the main draw prior to the event.
The doubles competition begins with 64 teams competing in a single elimination bracket starting Friday.
For the Mean Green, Shulzhenko will team up with Schultz, Adati will compete with Chalard and Nformi will play with Pielet. UNT has had a doubles team advance to the semifinal in this event in two of the last three seasons.
The title matches for both the singles and doubles competitions will take place Tuesday, Oct. 15.
UNT has had a history of recent success in the event with Olivia Malm, who will not play this weekend due to injury, advancing to the singles round of 16 last season and having a doubles team in the semifinal in both 2021 and 2022.
