LAKEWOOD RANCH, Florida — The UNT soccer team's season came to an end on Monday with a 1-0 to defeat to South Florida in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
The Mean Green conceded the eventual matching winning goal in the 11th minute.
"I want to thank my four seniors that have been with me for a while, Rachel, Devyn, Bailey and Maddie and with Jackie," said head coach John Hedlund. "They have all been amazing not only on the field with their play but being great leaders especially this year with such a young team made up of mostly underclassmen. "
UNT (7-6-6), who for the 30th straight year finishes with a winning record, started five players on Monday that were sophomores or younger and played eight total over the 90-minute match.
The tournament's No. 2 seed South Florida (11-2-4) fired off 24 shots on Monday versus the Mean Green and controlled possession for the first 30 minutes of the match. But the tide began to shift and North Texas had multiple strong opportunities, however, just couldn't finish those chances.
"I'm proud of this team because I really believed we drastically improved in so many areas from a year ago and that was with starting a lot of underclassmen in games especially freshman throughout the year," Hedlund said. "We might have been the youngest team in the conference. Still a lot of positives came out of this year, tying nationally ranked Memphis, having another winning season to keep the 30-year streak alive and qualifying for the AAC tournament for the first time. With the tremendous experience our youth has gained this year I really believe next year will be our year to definitely earn a top seed in the tournament and have a great chance to win it all. I'm really excited about next year's team and these talented seniors paved the way. They will be missed but never forgotten."
