UNT wins second straight match at Waranch
DENTON, Texas – In a highly contested match that saw a trio of three-set matches as well as three tiebreak sets, the UNT women's tennis team came out on top as they defeated New Mexico State 5-2 Thursday afternoon at Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green have now bounced back after dropping their first match of the season with a pair of victories to improve their overall record to 2-1 thus far this season.
The match started with UNT continuing its dominant play in doubles as they took the point for the third time in as many matches.
The combination of Stadfany Nformi and Olivia Halvorsen took the first match at line one 6-3.
After dropping the match at line three, Lilly Schultz and Lou Chalard were able to clinch the doubles point for the Mean Green with a strong 6-3 come-from-behind victory and put UNT on top 1-0.
In singles play, Schultz proved to be the most dominant player for the Mean Green in the match with a strong 6-4, 6-0 win at line six to give UNT a 2-0 advantage.
After a loss at line three made the score 2-1, Carolina Laydner put the Mean Green one point from the team clinch with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) hard-fought win at line five.
With the score 3-1, Nformi's perfect record was on the line at No. 2 as she dropped the opening set and found herself trailing in the second. The sophomore from Douala, Cameroon, did not blink, however, claiming both the second and third sets to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 and give the Mean Green the clinching point.
Lou Chalard was the final player for UNT to clinch her match, as she also had a highly contested matchup that saw her win 6-2, 6-7 (7-2), 6-4 and give the Mean Green its final win total of 5-2.
UNT will return to action with a doubleheader at Waranch on Sunday. The Mean Green will take on Houston at 10:00 AM and Collin County at 2:30 PM. Both matches will have streaming and live stats available on MeanGreenSports.com.
