Double doubles from DesiRay Kernal and Tommisha Lampkin not enough in loss
DENTON, Texas – A late 3-pointer from Charlotte's Olivia Porter handed UNT its second consecutive home loss in a 70-69 overtime defeat to the 49ers Wednesday night.
Entering the week 10-0 at The Super Pit, UNT has suffered back-to-back close losses to UTSA and Charlotte. The Roadrunners and 49ers are now accountable for four of the Mean Green's five conference losses this season.
It was a tightly contested game throughout consisting of 13 tie and 16 lead changes with neither team's lead getting larger than five points.
A 9-0 run for Charlotte late in the fourth quarter gave it a 59-55 lead with just under two minutes to play in regulation. Yet, the Mean Green battled their way back and tied the game at 59 with a layup from Tommisha Lampkin leaving 4.2 seconds on the clock. After Charlotte advanced the ball to half court, Jacee Busick's 3-point attempt from the corner rimmed out to send the game to overtime.
North Texas jumped out to a 69-65 lead in overtime and looked to hold the momentum it would need to close it out and collect its 20th win of the season. However, Olivia Porter would score five points in the last 38 seconds while UNT went scoreless to steal the victory for the 49ers. Porter had 16 points on the night, including her 3-pointer with two seconds left in overtime that delivered Charlotte the win.
Missed free throws and second-chance points ailed North Texas once again. UNT had 18 free throw attempts to Charlotte' six, but only went 10-of-18 from the charity stripe. The 49ers, who are ranked No. 11 in the AAC in offensive rebounding, collected 14 offensive boards resulting in 17 second-chance points.
Lampkin and DesiRay Kernal led the Mean Green, each recording double doubles in the loss. For Lampkin, her 13 points and 12 rebounds marked her ninth double double of the season, while it was Kernal's eighth in a 14-point, 11-rebound performance. Dyani Robinson matched Kernal with 14 points as top scorer for North Texas.
Dazia Lawrence scored a game-high 26 points for the 49ers but did so on 28 shots.
North Texas (19-7, 9-5 AAC) will look to get back in the win column when it hits the road to face UAB Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
