Stanislava Shulzhenko grabs lone singles win for UNT
PALM SPRINGS, CA. – The UNT women's tennis team held a 2-0 lead through doubles play and the first singles match but was unable to hold the edge as it fell 4-2 against Wichita State Tuesday at The Vintage Club.
UNT won the doubles point for the 11th time in 16 matches and got a straight sets win from Stanislava Shulzhenko before ultimately falling to 8-8 on the season.
The match started with the Mean Green continuing their strong play in doubles competition this season.
At line one, Olivia Malm and Shulzhenko picked up a 6-3 victory to improve their doubles record to 4-2 as a duo.
After dropping the match at line two, the doubles point came down to a back-and-forth battle at line three.
With a tiebreak looming, Olivia Halvorsen and Stadfany Nformi came up with a clutch 7-5 win to give the Mean Green the doubles point. The victory helped Halvorsen and Nformi improve to 7-3 when playing together this season.
In singles play, Shulzhenko put North Texas on top 2-0 with a strong 6-4, 6-0 win at line three. The freshman from Kharkiv, Ukraine, has now won three of her last five singles matches.
The Shockers took command from there, however, winning the matches at lines one, two, four and six to clinch the team victory.
The match was tightly contested throughout as four of the six singles matches went to a decisive third set.
UNT returns to action next Tuesday, March 19, when they travel to Stephenville, Texas, to take on Tarleton State at 3:00 PM.
