DENTON, Texas – UNT women's basketball will take on TCU Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT inside Schollmaier Arena in the first round of the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament.
The Mean Green and Horned Frogs were selected to the field of 32 teams that make up the WBIT bracket. Created by the NCAA in 2023, the WBIT is now considered the second postseason tournament, slotting behind the NCAA Tournament and ahead of the WNIT.
With TCU being a No. 3 seed in the WBIT, the Horned Frogs will host North Texas as the first three rounds of competition will be played at the site of the higher seed.
UNT earned an at-large berth to the tournament after posting a 23-7 regular season record that saw them win the most games in program history. It's victory over Memphis on March 5, clinched a share of the program's first conference title since 1986.
Although North Texas earned a double bye at the American Athletic Conference Championship, it would fall in its first game at the tournament in heartbreaking fashion to Rice, 61-59. While the Owls went on to win the AAC Tournament and secure the American's only spot in the NCAA Tournament, the Mean Green awaited their fate on Selection Sunday.
UNT will be making its sixth postseason appearance and first since the 2021-22 season. The Mean Green are 3-5 all-time in postseason play with their three wins coming in a run to the WNIT championship game in 2019.
TCU enters the WBIT at 20-11 overall in Mark Campbell's first season in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs began the season 14-0 and ranked in the AP Top 25 before injuries began to derail their season. A tough midseason stretch ultimately put them out of contention for an NCAA Tournament bid, but the Frogs finished strong winning five of their last seven games.
Sedona Prince and Madison Conner form a dangerous duo for TCU, averaging 20.2 and 19.4 points per game, respectively. Prince stands 6-7 and is a force in the paint on both ends of the court, while Conner is always a threat from behind-the-arc where she ranks fifth in the nation in 3-pointers made.
Thursday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Ron Thulin and Jada Curtis on the call. It can also be heard on the Varsity Sports Network App with Zac Babb and Michelle Brooks.
