DENTON, Texas – After its first meet of the outdoor season was cut short due to inclement weather, the UNT track and field team will split up between two meets held by Rice University and Texas A&M University Friday and Saturday.
North Texas had a positive showing at the Bill Schmidt Classic over the weekend. The Mean Green crowned eight champions before the meet was canceled Saturday afternoon.
The team now turns its attention to the Victor Lopez Classic and the Texas A&M Invitational. UNT's distance runners will be headed to Houston for a two-day meet at Rice University, while the rest of the team will travel to College Station for the Texas A&M Invitational.
North Texas will have athletes competing Friday and Saturday at the Victor Lopez Classic with the majority of the distance events being held at night. The men's 1,500 meters will be up first for North Texas at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Mason Garner will be one of seven UNT runners in the event as he makes his outdoor season debut. The Mean Green will also be represented in the men's and women's 5,000 meters and the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday evening.
Saturday's action for UNT is slated to begin at 5:50 p.m. with the men's 800 meters headlined by AAC Indoor champion, Sukeil Foucha, and Luke Canon, who won the event at the Bill Schmidt Classic. The meet will conclude with the 4x400-meter relays at 8:10 p.m. followed by an awards ceremony.
Meanwhile, the remainder of the Mean Green will be competing in College Station against the likes of Texas A&M, TCU, UTSA and others. The invitational will begin field events at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, with the running events slated to get underway at 5:30 p.m. CT.
