Mean Green win pair of singles matches
HOUSTON – The UNT tennis team won the line one doubles match as well as a pair of singles contests, but were unable to come up with a team victory as they fell 4-2 against No. 42 Charlotte Saturday at George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The 49ers were the highest-ranked team the Mean Green have faced off against this season as UNT drops to 9-10 overall this season while Charlotte improves to 15-6.
In doubles play, Olivia Malm and Stadfany Nformi played together for the first time this season. The duo put together a strong performance with a 6-3 victory at line one to tie the doubles match at one game apiece.
The 49ers were able to grab the doubles point, however, with a 6-2 win at line three.
After falling behind 3-0 through two complete singles matches, Marina Adati gave the Mean Green its first point with a strong 7-5, 6-1 win at line six. It was Adati's third victory of the season in singles play for UNT.
Playing at line one, Malm battled through a hard-fought three-set match to win 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to give the Mean Green their second point of the match. It was Malm's fourth singles win on the year as she handed reigning AAC Player of the Week Lucia Quiterio (12-4) just her fourth singles loss of the season in dual action.
At line two, Nformi also found herself in a battle as she won the first set 7-5 before dropping the second 4-6. The match finished in a 5-5 tie before being decided.
Lou Chalard also pushed her match to a decisive third set after losing the first set 4-6, winning the second 6-4 before ultimately falling in the third to give Charlotte the 4-2 victory.
UNT will return to action for their final home match of the season when they take on Tyler Junior College Thursday at 4:00 PM at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
