DENTON, Texas – UNT's KeAyla Dove will compete for a national title in shot put Saturday at the 2024 NCAA DI Indoor Track and Field Championships at The Track at New Balance in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dove qualified for the event with the No. 5 throw in the nation this season at the American Athletic Conference Championships. Her mark of 18.24 meters reset her personal best and the AAC record, while setting a new meet record at the event.
She is making her third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She became an All-American with a fifth-place finish in 2022 while at Sam Houston State University. Last season, she fouled on each of her three attempts in the prelims just missing out on All-America honors.
Although the NCAA Championships get underway Thursday evening, the women's shot put will not be contested until Saturday beginning at 4:45 p.m. CT.
Sixteen women will compete in the preliminary round, led by Colorado State's Mya Lesnar who leads the country with a mark of 19.10 meters this season. The top nine throws from the prelims will advance to the finals which will be held immediately after the conclusion of the prelims. The finalists who place first through eighth will earn First Team All-America honors, while No. 9 to No. 16 will be on the second team.
North Texas has not had an indoor All-American since 2006 when Brandi Stanfield finished No. 11 in the triple jump. The program has also only had one multiple-time NCAA All-American in Steven White who earned the distinction in the 400-meter hurdles during the 2012 and 2013 outdoor seasons. Dove could join White this weekend after earning second-team honors at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The 2024 NCAA Championships will air Friday and Saturday on ESPN+. Fans can follow along with Dove's performance on social media @MeanGreenTFXC.
