UNT has won at least one match in 15 of the last 16 conference championships
DALLAS – The UNT tennis team continued its impressive string of performances early in conference championship action as it defeated #13 East Carolina 4-1 in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Championship action Wednesday at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green knocked off the Pirates to grab at least one victory in the conference tournament for the 15th time in the last 16 championships. North Texas improved its overall record to 12-12 this season.
UNT will advance to the second round to take on #5 South Florida on Thursday at noon. North Texas dropped a narrow 4-3 decision on the road against USF earlier this season.
After dropping the doubles match at line two 6-3, the Mean Green would need to rally from behind on both lines one and three to win the doubles point.
UNT did just that, grabbing come-from-behind victories to take the doubles point for the 16th time in 24 matches this season.
At line one, Olivia Malm and Stanislava Shulzhenko rallied from down 4-1, winning five consecutive games to take the match 6-4. The duo won their sixth match of the season.
At line three, Marina Adati and Lou Chalard found themselves down 5-4 with a match point for the Pirates. Adati and Chalard fought back, however, winning the break point and taking the next two games to win the match 7-5 and give the Mean Green the doubles point victory.
In singles play, Stadfany Nformi gave UNT its first singles victory with a strong 6-4, 6-3 win at line two. Nformi picked up her team-leading 12th win of the season and has now won six consecutive decided matches.
Moments later, Carolina Laydner made the score 3-0 in favor of the Mean Green with a straight sets win of her own. Laydner picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory at line five to improve her record to 11-4 in singles play this season.
With three matches all in a decisive third set, Lilly Schultz gave UNT the match win with another come-from-behind victory at line six. Schultz won 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to clinch the match and win her eighth singles contest of the year.
The second round of the AAC Championship will be Thursday at 12:00 PM at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex. Live stats and video for the match will be available on MeanGreenSports.com.
