Mean Green Family,
I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying a wonderful start to your Mean Green summer!
Thank you to all of those who supported our incredible student-athletes through our 2nd Annual Day of Giving at UNT last month! We are beyond grateful for your faithful support and excited to share that over 1,000 individuals made a gift in support of UNT student-athletes.
This past year welcomed incredible moments, new milestones, and an exciting first year in the American Athletic Conference. We welcomed five new head coaches to the Mean Green Family and celebrated a countless number of new student-athlete records and amazing moments.
As the landscape of college athletics continues to evolve at a pace we haven't experienced before, I appreciate the relentless and unwavering support from Mean Green Nation! I know you have heard me say this often, but I am writing again to invite and encourage you to take advantage of the multiple opportunities we have available to support and advance our mission of Building Champions and Preparing Leaders.
I was grateful for the opportunity to share most recently on the GMGCast regarding some of the recent, monumental changes for NCAA Division I athletics, including Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), revenue sharing with student-athletes, and other items involved with the recent NCAA vs. House settlement. While more information and details regarding the NCAA vs. House settlement are still to come, we have several contingencies in motion as we plan and prepare for the future ahead.
In this ever-changing, evolving, and turbulent landscape of intercollegiate athletics, initiatives like NIL,the Athletic Center Expansion Project, the Mean Green Scholarship Fund, and our season tickets play critical roles in shaping our athletic future. While we continue to make positive progress, we consider these areas as the greatest opportunities, and collectively, we are not where we need to be. We need your support now more than ever to help us reach our lofty goals!
NAME, IMAGE, AND LIKENESS (NIL)
Many have asked how they can get involved with NIL as this priority remains critical in shaping the future for Mean Green Athletics. The Light the Tower Collective and the Mean Green Collective are working hard to create valuable opportunities for our student-athletes.
If you are a business owner or a supporter looking to help, I would encourage you to connect with these collectives and ask how you can join their efforts. You can also connect directly with UNT student-athletes through the Mean Green Exchange.
I also wish to provide some context around the amount of NIL support being raised through collectives in the American Athletic Conference. At this point in time, most collectives at AAC member institutions are targeting $1-2M for the sport of football and $600K+ in the sport of men's basketball. Some institutions in our league are raising more than this. While this only mentions two sports, I wish to be transparent in providing this context around NIL in today's environment. We will continue to push for opportunities for ALL Mean Green student-athletes.
While we are optimistic for continued regulations and guardrails surrounding NIL from the NCAA and/or Congress, we strongly encourage and invite you to support UNT student-athletes through one of our two collectives.
ATHLETIC CENTER EXPANSION PROJECT
Our staff is actively fundraising for our Athletic Center expansion project. This facility renovation and expansion is critical and time sensitive for how we serve and support each of our 350+ student-athletes for academic services, sports medicine, nutrition, as well as strength and conditioning. With some of the significant NCAA changes unfolding in front of us, we are hoping to complete this project in two phases.
MGSF AND SEASON TICKETS
As crucial to each academic year and our annual fund efforts, we appreciate the many MGSF members and season ticket holders that continue to support through these avenues. These areas will remain important as we prepare for future success!
While I apologize for the length of this message to you all, it is important that I continue to provide updates and context around NCAA changes, our growth as an athletics department, and the opportunities we have for future success. Your passion and support mean the world to our student-athletes, and we invite you to lock arms with us as we boldly push forward towards our goals and desired outcomes.
Thank you for all you do in support of our mission. Let's soar to new heights together.
Go Mean Green!
