DENTON, Texas – The UNT men's and women's cross country programs have released their competition slate for the 2024 season, as announced by head coach Erik Stevens on Wednesday.
The Mean Green open their schedule on Aug. 31 in Conway, Ark., at the UCA Bear XC Invitational. A trip to the J.K. Gold Classic in Wichita, Kan., on Sept. 7 will precede a trio of premiere meets on the schedule.
Two of the final three meets of the regular season will be hosted by Texas A&M University, beginning with the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 13. UNT will travel north to St. Paul, Minn., the following week for the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 20.
The last of five regular season meets will be the Arturo Barrios Invitational back in College Station, Texas on Oct. 18.
"The early part of our schedule will allow us to work on several different aspects that we've worked on over the offseason and see how that translates to race day," Stevens said. "We're really excited for trips to Minnesota and Texas A&M as our key competitions to try and garner some points for the rankings and at-large system prior to the start of the postseason."
The postseason opens Saturday, Nov. 2 at the American Athletic Conference Championships. The conference meet will be held at the Clapp Cross Country Course in Wichita, Kan., for the second time ever and first since the 2020 AAC Championships.
The Mean Green will travel back to College Station, Texas, for the NCAA postseason competition beginning Friday, Nov. 15 with the South Central Regional. The 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Madison, Wis., on Nov. 23 will mark the conclusion of the season.
UNT returns a core group of runners from last season, that saw the programs take a step in the right direction. At the 2023 South Central Regional, the men's team placed 12th after finishing 24th in 2022, while the women's squad recorded their highest finish at the meet since 2018.
The Mean Green will once again be led by NCAA qualifier Victor Neiva. The school record holder in both the 8K and the 10K placed 12th at the 2023 AAC Championships and 10th at the NCAA South Central Regional to earn an automatic bid to his second NCAA Cross Country Championships.
