COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A young group of UNT runners took on a deep field of teams at the Texas A&M Invitational Friday morning as the Mean Green men took 11th in the team race, while the women finished in 14th place.
The meet was hosted at Watts Cross Country Course, which will also be the site of the NCAA South Central Regional come Nov. 15. The morning began with the men running their first 8K of the season after a 5K at the UCA Bear XC Invitational and a 6K at the JK Gold Classic.
Sophomore Iain Salter placed highest among the Mean Green, crossing in 25:00.9 in 56th place. A trio of true freshmen in Joseph Wienen, Nolan House and David Kalwahali finished shortly after Salter as each of the men finished within the top 65 individuals. Hunter Hendry and Hardy Swann closed it out for the men's squad that finished with 284 points.
"Overall, I thought it was a solid day for a group of freshmen or first time 8K racers," head coach Erik Stevens said. "All we wanted to do was understand what 8,000 meters felt like so we can get used to that and put some different strategies in play moving forward into the back half of the season."
In the women's 5K, Destiny Hernandez led the group once again with an 85th place finish in 19:20.8. Ella Bengtsson placed 92nd, while Amy Pritchard set a personal best in the 5K with a time of 19:58.8, improving her time by nearly 30 seconds. Tiblets Abreha clocked a 20:17.6 in her first appearance of the season, while Brenna Zerby crossed the line in 20:45.4.
"On the women's side, it was an OK day," Stevens said. "A few of them are just opening up their season, while a few are coming off of some lighter training sessions. I think the ladies got a little bit ahead of themselves, and they paid for it a little bit late in that 5K race. I do feel with a couple more weeks under our belt that this particular crew will be able to handle 5K really well."
UNT will be back in action Friday, Sept. 20 at the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota. After the Roy Griak meet, the Mean Green will have a month long break before entering the home stretch of the season.
