COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The UNT cross country teams had their final tuneup for the American Championship, as the Mean Green competed at the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Friday morning at Texas A&M.
In the men's 8k race, UNT finished 17th out of 32 teams, and the women finished 23rd out of 37 teams in the 6k race.
The men were led by sophomore Joseph Wienen, who finished 42nd in a personal-best time of 24:04.5, and sophomore Nolan House, who came in 89th in 24:29.1. Sophomore Connor Bartek finished 132nd in 24:55.8, sophomore Aidan Shannon finished 156th in 25.16.1, sophomore Hunter Hendry finished 178th in 25:28.6 and sophomore Matthew Montgomery finished 191st in 25:36.8. Junior Alan Proenza finished 211th in 25:52, freshman Luke Anderson took 252nd in 26:30.8, junior Ethan Rodriguez finished 273rd in 27:03.7, freshman Jason Wade finished 279th in 27:12.9 and sophomore Landin Wolfe rounded out UNT's finishers in 28:29.3 to finish 304th.
"The men had a good performance up front with Joe, and with Nolan trying to stick in that position," cross country Erik Stevens said. "We are trying to figure out how to work as a unit on race day and we are finding some struggle in that currently. We will jump into a brief recovery window and then make the final push to conference."
On the women's side, the Mean Green were led by junior Aditi Silwal's 97th-place finish in 21:44.6, and senior London Culbreath's 137th-place finish in 22:12.3. Sophomore Ella Bengtsson finished 154th in 22:23.7, freshman Aubrey Milam finished 166th in 22:32.4 and freshman Baylee Tapley finished 265th in 24:42.7.
"The women executed plans pretty well and are still working back from the injury riddled start to the season," Stevens said. "I'm pleased with how they worked together in the bigger field today. We have a few things that we need to work on as we move into championship season."
The Mean Green will compete in the American Championship on Nov. 1, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
