SAN MARCOS, Texas – UNT women's golf senior Malisone Chanthapanya on Monday broke the program record for the best single round 18-hole score as she shot a 64 (-8) to wrap up the Jim West Challenge at the Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos, Texas.
Chanthapanya was the tournament's overall runner-up as she shot a 207 (-9) over the two days and was just one stroke off the individual champion. As a team the Mean Green fought back after a sluggish start and finished in seventh place of the 14-team tournament as they shot a 870 (+6).
"I'm very excited to see Mali break through this week," said UNT head coach Michael Akers. "Overall, we showed we can compete with anyone. The +8 in round one really hurt us but we can certainly gain momentum from this event and continue to set our goals high."
Chanthapanya's lowest previous round was a 69 (-3) in the first round of last year's Jim West Challenge.
Her second-place finish is her highest ever finish in a tournament at the DI level and it's her best score in a tournament, beating her previous best score of a 214 (-2) and a seventh-place finish in the 2024 Powercat Invitational. Chanthapanya's overall total score of a 207 (-9) is tied for the fourth lowest in program history.
On Monday the senior entered the final round sitting in 10th place of the 14-team tournament hosted by Texas State. The Fort Worth native had shot an impressive 143 (-1) through the first 36 holes but the final 18 rewrote the Mean Green record books.
Chanthapanya battled through windy conditions on Monday and had no bogeys while recording six birdies and an eagle on hole 17. Headed into her final hole, Chathapanya needed at least a birdy to break the program record and she did exactly that to finish the day with a 64, breaking the previous record of a 65 set by Katie Finley in 2020.
Chanthapanya's strong finish was symbolic of the entire Mean Green team at the Jim West Challenge. UNT struggled in the first round with none of the five players shooting below par, including Chanthapanya who finished round one with a 72 (E). But in the second round all five players improved on their respective scores including junior Katharina Anglett who made a nine-shot improvement and senior Mason Lewis who made a four-shot improvement as they followed Chanthapanya's lead.
But the final round belonged to Chanthapanya as she outpaced all players in the tournament and jumped up eight spots on the leaderboard to finish alone in second, break the single round program record and break her own personal single round record by six strokes.
The Mean Green will be right back in action next week as they will travel to Waco to play in the Baylor Brawl starting Tuesday Oct. 28.
