WICHITA, Kan. – UNT volleyball secured a 3-2 (25-23, 25-20, 14-25, 23-25, 16-14) road win over Wichita State on Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.
"We feel really good coming away with a victory today," head coach Dave Fleming said. "As a group, we keep talking about winning as a team and even though it took us a little while to respond in the fifth set, we did respond and got the win."
The Mean Green (17-5, 7-3) looked dominant in sets one and two before the Shockers (13-8, 5-4) forced a decisive fifth set where the hosts led 5-0 before North Texas scored seven of the next eight points to take the lead.
Redshirt sophomore Jahniya Jackson and freshman Sidney Soria acted as the catalysts for the fifth-set victory as Jackson dropped five kills on six attacks and Soria notched 10 assists on 21 attempts in the frame.
Star setter Alexa Washington collected her 12th double-double of the season with 21 assists and 12 digs before she exited late in the fourth set. Fleming shifted into a 5-1 offensive scheme with Soria stepping into the lone setter role.
"I've told [Sidney] in the past, 'You've been here before and you've done this. You're an all-state volleyball player that ran a 5-1, you can do this,'" Fleming said. "Basically, the message was that we believe in her and she responded."
Soria finished the match with a career-high 32 assists and added eight digs, two kills and one ace.
Opposite hitter Lilly Croshaw shined with a .302 hitting percentage with a team-high 17 kills on 43 attacks while she added four blocks.
"We love playing in games like this," Croshaw said. "The more difficult games are fun and our team does a great job playing together as one."
With the win, UNT became the 15th team in program history to reach 17 wins and extended its current winning streak to six matches, the second-best spell this season.
North Texas returns to the UNT Volleyball Center on Wednesday at 6 p.m. versus Abilene Christian (9-14) for a midweek non-conference match on ESPN+. Fans can purchase tickets HERE.
