Largest gift in UNT Athletics History to create The Weger Family Strength and Conditioning Center
DENTON – North Texas Athletics has received a transformational $4.6 million gift from Tom and Kristy Weger, of Coppell Construction Company, marking the largest philanthropic contribution in UNT Athletics history.
The Wegers' historic gift will support the completion of the expansion of the UNT Athletic Center and establish the Weger Family Strength and Conditioning Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed to enhance the development, performance, and wellbeing of Mean Green student-athletes across all sports.
"At UNT, we are committed to providing a transformational education that unlocks our students' full potential," UNT President Harrison Keller said. "This generous gift from the Weger family will help take Mean Green athletics to the next level of competition and student support in pursuit of excellence, and we are very grateful for their gift."
The Weger family has been longtime supporters of North Texas Athletics and the university community. Both Tom (Class of '89) and Kristy (Class of '90) are UNT Alumni. Their passion for building and their deep ties to the region have made them champions of growth and opportunity in Denton and beyond.
"This is a landmark moment for UNT Athletics," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley. "Tom and Kristy's generosity reflect an unwavering belief in the mission, vision, and direction of our institution and athletics department and the impact of investing in Mean Green student-athletes. The Weger Family Strength and Conditioning Center will stand as a cornerstone of our commitment to championship excellence and our pursuit of Building Champions and Preparing Leaders. State-of-the-art facilities play a critical role in developing championship programs and supporting the overall student-athlete experience."
The gift is the 12th gift of $1 million or more in the history of UNT Athletics.
The expansion of the UNT Athletic Center, home to the Mean Green's football operations, sports medicine, sports performance and rehabilitation facilities for all programs, as well as football and administration offices, represents a major step forward in the department's long-term facility master plan. The Wegers' contribution ensures that student-athletes will have access to advanced training technology, modern recovery spaces, and an enhanced environment for physical and mental performance.
"UNT Athletics is our great university's calling card to the nation," Tom Weger said. "The more successful our athletic programs, the greater our reach to attract the best and brightest students from around the country. This project benefits every student-athlete and that reflects our family's love for the entire Mean Green nation! GMG!"
The Weger Family Strength and Conditioning Center will feature expanded training space, cutting-edge equipment, and dedicated areas for sport-specific development, serving all Mean Green athletic programs."
With the Wegers' leadership gift, North Texas continues to strengthen its foundation for sustained success in the American Conference and beyond. In today's college athletics landscape, investing in premier facilities is essential to attract top talent, enhance performance, and provide student-athletes with the resources needed to compete at the highest level.
