DENTON – UNT volleyball defeated UTSA 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-19) in front of a sellout crowd of 480 at the UNT Volleyball Center on Wednesday night.
"This win was a huge one to get our momentum back," head coach Dave Fleming said. "Losing that first set and rebounding the way we did … gave us a lot of confidence."
The Mean Green (12-5, 2-3) collected its 20th all-time win over the Roadrunners (10-6, 3-2), becoming the fifth different program that UNT has more than 20 victories over. Redshirt sophomore Jahniya Jackson led all scorers with 15.0 points as she tallied a match-high 12 kills and added six block assists.
"I think the team had a lot of energy," Jackson said. "We've been working on this all week, so it really feels good that it paid off today."
Sophomore Addison Achilles set her career high with eight blocks while setter Alexa Washington matched her personal-best mark of nine kills while she added 16 assists.
Early mistakes in the first set forced the Mean Green into a quick deficit as six of the first 12 points scored by the Roadrunners were on service or attack errors. UTSA then extended a 7-1 scoring run for a 19-10 advantage which UNT was unable to overcome, dropping the set 25-18.
After falling behind 2-0 in the second, North Texas quickly rebounded for a 13-2 run which included a pair of service aces from freshman libero Dakota Mitchell. Armed with the lead, the Mean Green stormed to a 25-18 set victory as Washington capped the frame with a kill.
The third set was a similar story as UNT took the lead with an early 7-1 run and never trailed in the frame again. The Roadrunners pulled within two points before the Mean Green closed with a 12-4 run, including three kills from Lilly Croshaw along with two kills and a solo block from Loredana Fouonji.
Trailing the match 2-1, UTSA came out swinging in the fourth with a seven-point spell before North Texas leveled the score at 8-8 as it scored seven of the next eight points. The sides went back-and-forth before UNT took the lead, at 17-16, during an 11-3 run that sealed the fourth-set victory.
The Mean Green will then travel to Tulane (9-6, 1-3) on Friday for a conference showdown at 6:30 p.m. from Fogelman Arena with streaming coverage on ESPN+.
