DENTON – Mean Green volleyball fell 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 22-25, 20-25) to American Conference regular season champions Rice on Sunday afternoon at the UNT Volleyball Center.
"Rice is a really good team and they've won 15 straight [matches]. They're really comfortable with who they are and what they do," head coach Dave Fleming said. "I saw glimpses on our side … but we just weren't as consistent as they were. I think they took bigger swings when they needed them and were a tad more consistent. I'm really happy with the pressure that we applied and would love another crack at them."
North Texas (21-8, 11-5) finished the match with more kills, assists and digs than the Owls (19-8, 15-1) while it held the visitors to a .186 hitting percentage, tied for the lowest efficiency mark in a conference contest for Rice this season.
Senior setter Alexa Washington posted her fourth triple-double of the season with 15 kills, 22 assists and 14 digs. She also became the first player in program history with over 100 kills, 500 assists and 300 digs in a season, and is one of only six players in Division I this year to join this exclusive club.
Freshman Sidney Soria paced the offense with 26 assists while fellow freshman Dakota Mitchell collected 21 digs, her fourth match to exceed 20 digs this season.
The Mean Green will travel to the American Conference Championship on the University of South Florida campus at The Corral in Tampa, Fla.
