HOUSTON – UNT volleyball snapped its eight-match conference winning streak as Rice won 3-0 (23-25, 14-25, 22-25) at Tudor Fieldhouse on Friday night.
"We're obviously disappointed but Rice is a quality opponent, and we were able to rattle them a couple times," head coach Dave Fleming said. "Overall, I thought we played pretty safe tonight and you're just not going to beat the number one team in the conference if you're safe."
The Mean Green (19-7, 9-4) posted its lowest hitting percentage mark (.087) in over a month as the Owls (16-8, 12-1) extended its American Conference winning streak to 12 matches.
Sophomore Lilly Croshaw led the UNT attack with 13 kills, including eight in the decisive third set, while senior Alexa Washington dished out a team-high 15 assists.
UNT led for the majority of the first set, including four-point leads at 10-6 and 15-11, and held a 22-20 advantage before Rice closed with a 5-1 run. North Texas's woes continued in the second as the Owls fended off early deficits to secure a 25-14 set win.
The Mean Green would not go quietly as the third set saw a match-high seven lead changes and 13 tie scores as Croshaw and middle blocker Ryann Vik combined for 10 kills on 18 attacks with only two errors. Despite a late run from the visitors, Rice clinched the match with a 25-22 victory in the third frame.
North Texas returns home on Sunday at noon against Temple (15-11, 5-7) on ESPN+ from the UNT Volleyball Center. Fans can purchase tickets HERE.
