DENTON, Texas – Jazzy Owens-Barnett led a second-half surge, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 24-point halftime deficit in the UNT women's basketball 84-72 loss to Santa Clara Sunday afternoon inside The Super Pit.
The Mean Green (6-6) outscored Santa Clara 52-40 in the second half, spearheaded by Owens-Barnett's 11 points in the third quarter. The senior point guard found her groove on the offensive end as did North Texas after a first half that resulted in just 20 points on 22% shooting.
After trailing 44-20 at the break and facing the largest halftime deficit of the season, North Texas was able to cut Santa Clara's lead to five points in the fourth quarter. However, a 7-0 run for the Lady Broncos that included a Kylee Fox 3-pointer put the game out of reach in the final minutes.
Fox led all players with 23 points on the day with four 3-pointers. Santa Clara hit 12 3-pointers as a team and had four players score 15 or more points. For North Texas, Owens-Barnett finished with 13 points, while Tionna Lidge also reached double figures for the first time since Nov. 7 against Grambling as she finished with 11 points.
The Mean Green will return to action Dec. 30 at Florida Atlantic to kick off American Conference play.
