The win clinched back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time in program history
GREENVILLE, N.C. — The UNT women's basketball team collected its 20th win of the season in dramatic fashion, defeating East Carolina, 75-73, in a double overtime thriller on Saturday afternoon.
It's another milestone reached in the Jason Burton era as North Texas has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in program history in his first two years. Tommisha Lampkin also made history on Saturday as she passed Madison Townley for career games played in her 134th appearance for UNT.
East Carolina led for over 41 minutes of game time, which included nearly all of the first three quarters and a lead that was as big as 11 points. However, UNT battled back in the second half behind 10 points from Jaaucklyn Moore in the third quarter and 11 points from Lampkin in the fourth to ignite the comeback. Ereauna Hardaway's driving layup with 40 seconds to play gave UNT its first lead since the opening quarter. After ECU's Jayla Hearp went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to tie the game, Hardaway had a chance to win it in regulation but was denied at the buzzer.
The Pirates instantly went up 65-58 in the first overtime period, but North Texas settled in and continued to battle back into the game. With 18 seconds to play, Moore nailed 3-pointer from the corner off a baseline out-of-bounds play to tie the game at 67. Similar to Hardaway in regulation, Moore had another chance to win it at the buzzer but couldn't get the attempt to fall.
As the teams traded buckets in the second overtime, Kyla Deck and Jaelyn Talley powered through contact near the basket on consecutive possessions to take the lead for the final time. An East Carolina timeout advanced the ball past halfcourt but the Mean Green defense kept the Pirates from getting off a shot in the final five seconds to secure the 75-73 win.
The Mean Green and Pirates have now combined to play six overtime periods over their last two matchups. UNT also came out on top in a four-overtime marathon on Feb. 27, 2024, in Denton.
On her historic day, Lampkin led the Mean Green with 23 points and 15 rebounds, which marked her third consecutive game with 20 or more points and 15 boards. Moore followed with 18 points, her most since Jan. 8, and hit four of UNT's five 3-pointers in the game.
Khia Miller posted 20 points to lead ECU, while Amiya Joyner had 19 points and 20 rebounds of her own.
UNT improved to 20-7 overall and 12-3 in AAC play heading into its final home stretch of the season beginning with Charlotte on Wednesday, Feb. 26, and UAB on Saturday, March 1.
