MARICOPA, Ariz. - The UNT women's golf team wrapped up its season on Sunday at the National Golf Invitational with a third-place finish at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes.
The Mean Green were led, for the second straight day, by sophomore Katharina Anglett, who shot a 2-under 70, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 16th hole, as she tied for 15th overall at 8-over par. That put her just behind teammate, and fellow sophomore, Bouquet Subsomboon, who was the team's top finisher at 7-over in solo 14th place.
UNT had the third-best round of the day with a 6-over 294 to move up one spot on the leaderboard, seven shots back of Eastern Michigan and 11 back of winner Santa Clara.
Fifth-year senior Shreya Pal played her final collegiate round on Sunday after flying in late Friday so she could participate in UNT's graduation ceremonies on Friday afternoon. The 4.0 student and five-year letterwinner is the only player in program history to be a part of a postseason run five times - four times as an NCAA Regional qualifier and this time as an NGI participant. This was the third iteration of the NGI, which was organized by Golfweek's Lance Ringler as a college golf equivalent to college basketball's NIT.
"I'm glad we had the opportunity to play in the NGI," head coach Michael Akers said. "Lance Ringler and Golfweek did a great job hosting the event. Shreya wanted to attend her graduation so she went to graduation and was in our lineup for the final round. I'm glad we got that last walk in to finish her career. She earned a 4.0 GPA at UNT and was a solid player for us. I appreciate everything she has done for us and wish her all the best."
Akers said the program has a lot to look forward to next year, as just two seniors move on while Malisone Chanthapanya has chosen to return for one more season she was awarded as a former NAIA player.
"I'm very excited for next year," Akers said. "Our lineup will be much deeper. We have two impact freshmen coming in, and Mali will stay for an additional year."
