DENTON – The UNT soccer team claimed its first win of the season in shutout fashion, as junior midfielder Mia Bernard gave the Mean Green a halftime lead and senior defender Peyton Renfro's first career goal in the 50th minute gave UNT a 2-0 win over Sam Houston on Sunday night.
UNT (1-1-0) bounced back from a season-opening loss on Thursday night against Incarnate Word, in which the Mean Green outshot UIW 38-6 but managed to just find the back of the net once in a 2-1 loss. The Mean Green outshot Sam Houston (0-1-1), 12-11, on the night.
"It was an outstanding win tonight against a very good team that has a great chance to win CUSA this year," said head coach John Hedlund, who earned his 401st career victory. "I'm extremely proud of our players tonight coming back from a devastating loss on Thursday after outshooting our opponent 38-6 and somehow losing. The team showed great character in moving on and beating a solid Sam Houston team 2-0."
Renfro said there was pressure to get into the win column on Sunday after the disappointing loss, and she was proud of how her team responded, as well.
"We kind of had a chip on our shoulder from last game, and we knew we had more to prove," Renfro said. "We wanted to prove we could get the ball in the back of the net."
Sophomore goalkeeper Hicks Bishop earned her second career clean sheet in her sixth career start with two saves on the night.
Next up for UNT is a big matchup with DFW rival SMU, as the Mustangs will come to Denton on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. start.
