DENTON - The UNT soccer team will play its third home match in as many games this season on Thursday night, when the Mean Green host DFW rival SMU at 7 p.m., in what should be a raucous environment at the Soccer and Track and Field Stadium for Party at the Pitch Night.
The Mean Green (1-1-0) bounced back from a season-opening loss to shut out Sam Houston, 2-0, on Sunday night, as UNT got goals from Mia Bernard in the first half and Peyton Renfro, who scored the first goal of her three-plus years with the Mean Green with a beautiful finish in the 50th minute for the deciding advantage.
Renfro's second-half goal was assisted by Bernard and freshman Payton Annis, whose mother, Caree Ridenour, played for UNT and head coach John Hedlund and was an all-conference performer from 2001-04. She was also a part of UNT's first conference championship team. Bernard and Annis each have a goal and an assist through two games, and Annis is the second UNT legacy player in program history but the first to ever record a goal or an assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hicks Bishop earned her second career shutout in just her sixth career start, stopping two Bearkats shots on the night.
SMU (1-1-0) comes to town after a 2-0 win over Northwestern State on Sunday followed a 2-0 season-opening loss at Wake Forest. The Mean Green are 4-11-2 all-time in the series with the Mustangs, and SMU won the last meeting on Oct. 28, 2023, by a score of 3-1. UNT last beat SMU, 2-1, on Sept. 2, 2011, and is 1-3-1 all-time against the Mustangs in Denton.
