DENTON — The UNT soccer team (3-2-0) secured a decisive 4-0 victory over McNeese (1-3-1) at Mean Green Soccer Stadium on Thursday, with three goals coming in the second half. Thursday's victory was the Mean Green's largest margin of victory on the year and their second straight win overall.
Claire Niedermeier led the Mean Green with a goal and an assist. Summer Brown also added a goal as she put two shots on target on the night. Payton Annis provided an assist while tallying three shots, two of which were on target. Rydlii Rives scored once, her first goal of the season. Goalkeeper Alina Arneth made her first career start and recorded a shutout with two saves.
"I told the team before tonight that in our four games prior we have outshot our opponents 100-25," said head coach John Hedlund. "Tonight was no different as we outshot McNeese 29-4. The only difference is the shots are starting to go in and it was nice to see four quality goals tonight from our offense. It was a complete team effort tonight and I was very proud of the defense getting the shutout."
The first half saw North Texas take an early advantage with a goal in the 14th minute from Niedermeier, assisted by Lily Cunningham and Mia Bernard, establishing a 1-0 lead. UNT maintained pressure on McNeese with persistent attempts on goal, notably from Peyton Renfro, who had multiple shots saved. Arneth secured the defense, saving McNeese's attempts, while North Texas concluded the half with a 1-0 lead.
The second half began with a strong offensive push from the Mean Green, leading to several scoring opportunities and corner kicks. At the 52-minute mark, Rives broke through, assisted by Niedermeier, to make it 2-0. Shortly after, at 57', Bernard extended the lead with a goal, assisted by Annis. The team's dominance was further solidified when Brown scored at 87' on a breakaway.
