COMMERCE, Texas – UNT volleyball opened the Lion Invitational with two victories on Friday at the Field House as head coach Dave Fleming captured his first wins at the helm. He became the fourth coach in program history to debut with back-to-back victories.
"I'm really proud of our team," Fleming said. "There are so many new people on the roster, including me, I just didn't know what to expect. As a team, we talked about resilience and grit, and I think we showed that today. I'm really proud of our floor defense and I don't think we've played our best volleyball yet."
The Mean Green (2-0) first defeated Little Rock 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 19-25, 25-15) before it followed up with another four-set win over Providence (25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 25-13) in the late afternoon match.
Reagan Bedell ended the day with a team-high 33 kills as she posted a career high 17 against the Trojans (0-1) in the first contest. In the second match, UNT held the Friars (1-1) to a hitting percentage of .065, the first time a North Texas team has held an opponent under .100 since Oct. 18, 2024, against Tulsa.
True freshmen Dakota Mitchell, Alessandra Romo and Sidney Soria showcased impressive performances. Mitchell led the match against Little Rock with 24 digs, while Romo and Soria each recorded two service aces. Versus Providence, Soria achieved her first career double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs.
In the opening match of the season against Little Rock, the first set featured a strong start from Alexa Washington as she compiled eight of her career-high 25 assists. After overcoming a late deficit in the second set, UNT clinched a 26-24 victory with a decisive kill from Lilly Croshaw, assisted by Washington.
The third set saw Little Rock rally back for a 25-19 victory, but the Mean Green responded emphatically in the fourth set, dominating with a 25-15 win, highlighted by five kills from Bedell and a pair of service aces from Romo.
Against Providence, UNT demonstrated resilience after initially trailing in the first set. Mitchell's service sparked a 6-0 run, leading to a 25-16 win. The second set was competitive, with Croshaw delivering back-to-back kills to secure a 25-23 victory. The third set posed challenges as UNT fell behind 7-0, but they fought back to narrow the gap. Ultimately, Providence edged out a 25-21 win in that frame.
The fourth set showcased UNT's dominance, with Bedell and Croshaw contributing significantly to a commanding 25-13 victory, as late errors from Providence sealed their fate.
The Mean Green will close the Lion Invitational against hosts East Texas A&M at 2 p.m. on ESPN+ from the Field House.
