COMMERCE, Texas – UNT volleyball remained undefeated after a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-19, 25-13) over Lion Invitational hosts East Texas A&M on Saturday at The Field House.
"We had a really good weekend," head coach Dave Fleming said. "The team did a great job applying pressure with our serving and defense and backed it up with solid and balanced attacking. We have a lot of solid information to build on and can start working on that Monday."
Saturday's win marked the first 3-0 start for the Mean Green since 2018 and longest winning streak for the program since Oct. 4, 2024, when North Texas collected four-straight victories. UNT held the Lions (0-3) to an .093 hitting percentage, the second-consecutive match to do so after Friday's win over Providence.
Sophomore outside hitter Reagan Bedell was named Lion Invitational Most Valuable Player while redshirt sophomore Jahniya Jackson was selected as a member of the all-tournament team.
Bedell led the team with 41 kills and 106 attacks and added five service aces on Saturday, tied for the fourth-best single match mark for UNT since 2008. Jackson starred in the sweep of the Lions with 14 kills on 24 attacks for a career-best .458 hitting percentage.
In her first career start, middle blocker Addison Achilles shined as she posted career-high marks of nine kills, 15 attacks, six blocks and 12 points.
UNT opened the match strongly as Bedell tallied the opening point on a kill assisted by Alexa Washington at the start of the set. Washington then contributed a service ace, giving UNT an early 2-0 lead. A critical moment came when Sidney Soria subbed in and delivered multiple assists during a decisive run, helping the team to a 10-6 advantage. Jackson closed the set with consecutive kills, leading UNT to secure the first set with a 25-13 victory over the Lions.
The second set began with a balanced exchange of points, but UNT found momentum with Reese Watters delivering two consecutive kills, propelling a 4-0 run to lead 7-3. Washington's setting was instrumental, assisting on multiple kills, including a key rally extending play by Jackson, who secured a total of four kills in the set. Bedell's service ace and subsequent points widened the gap to 15-10, while Jackson continued to be a force at the net, contributing crucial blocks and kills. The set concluded with transfer Brianna Miller's decisive kill, the first of her career, sealing the 25-19 victory for UNT.
UNT dominated the third set with a strong offensive performance, opening with a kill by Washington and quickly establishing momentum. Bedell's service ace pushed the score to 6-1, contributing to a significant 8-0 run that put the Lions on the back foot. Notable contributions also came from Achilles, who delivered multiple kills, and Jackson, who sealed the set with a kill assisted by Washington, concluding the set 25-13 in favor of UNT.
North Texas travels to sunny South Florida for the 305 Challenge with day one in Coral Gables against Drake on Friday at noon CT before meeting Miami (FL) at 5 p.m. CT on ACC Network.
