Sophomore RB from Mount Vernon honored among top running backs in FBS
DALLAS – UNT sophomore running back Makenzie McGill II has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watch list.
The award is given annually to the best running back in college football based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character. McGill is one of 103 FBS running backs honored on the watch list.
McGill, a sophomore out of Mount Vernon, Texas, closed the 2024 season with 78 carries for 502 yards and 10 touchdowns. He is the only returning running back in the American who logged double-digit rushing TDs in 2024.
In addition, McGill is one of only 11 RBs who had 10+ rushing TDs to return to the team he played for in 2024 along with Notre Dame's Jeremiah Love, Penn State's Nick Singleton and Texas A&M's Le'Veon Moss among others. He joins San Jose State's Floyd Chalk IV as one of only two non-power 4 RBs to stake that claim.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will also be announced in November.
The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2025 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on December 12, 2024.
The award is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. Each Tuesday of this season, The PwC SMU Athletic Forum will once again announce a Doak Walker National Running Back of the week.
Season tickets for the 2025 season remain on sale. Season ticket holders receive additional benefits including guaranteed seat locations when hosting The American Championship Game along with VIP presale opportunities for away games, bowl games and other events hosted at the stadium.
