NORMAN, Okla. – The UNT soccer team fell 1-0 on Sunday night to the 20th-ranked team in the country and suffered its first shutout of the season to Oklahoma at John Crain Field.
The Mean Green (3-3-0) entered the night ranked third nationally in shots per game but were held to just four shots, thanks to a strong defensive effort from the Sooners. UNT's defense stepped up, as well, holding Oklahoma to 13 shots and the one goal in the 17th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Alina Arneth made her third straight appearance and second straight start and had a career-high three saves on the night, but couldn't hold off the Sooners (6-0-0) on their one goal after a ball was hit off the goalpost and then put in the net off a rebound by Kayla Keefer.
"I'm proud of my team's fight and how we battled the No. 20 ranked team in the nation on their home turf," head coach John Hedlund said. "Having six players out, I knew we were going to lose in the depth department tonight against OU, but our players just never quit. We all kept fighting throughout the match and almost tied it up at the end."
UNT forced a save from Oklahoma keeper Caroline Duffy on a shot from freshman Lillian Vandiver in the 69th minute and had a couple of other good opportunities late on runs from Summer Brown and Claire Niedermeier.
UNT will return home on Thursday to face Abilene Christian (3-3-0) with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ACU has wins over UTEP, Tulsa and Houston Christian but is also coming off a 1-0 loss on Sunday night to East Texas A&M.
