DENTON – In front of a capacity crowd, Mean Green volleyball swept Little Rock 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-17) on Friday night at the UNT Volleyball Center.
"I have been in a lot of matches in the NCAA, and [tonight was] just a super fun environment," head coach Dave Fleming said. "It's going to be a huge home-court advantage for us, so I loved it. The band was great, the crowd was great and our team played really well, and I think that provided the energy for the crowd as well."
UNT (5-2) recorded its second-best hitting percentage of the season at .360 with 43 kills on 86 attacks, nearly doubling the Trojans (3-5) who finished with 24 kills. Jahniya Jackson led the match with 11 kills on 16 attacks while Loredana Fouonji dropped eight kills, including set winners in the second and third frames.
In the opening set, the Mean Green registered an 8-1 run to quickly pull away from the Trojans. Despite dominating the early moments, Little Rock pulled with three points late in the frame before a quick four-point spell forced set point where sophomore Reese Watters collected the set winner.
North Texas dominated the second as freshman Alessandra Romo dropped two of her career-high four service aces and fellow first year Sidney Soria distributed seven of her match-high 22 assists.
The final stanza belonged to Fouonji as she opened the set with a kill before she collected the last three points of the match with kills. For the match, she would tie Addison Achilles with the most total blocks at four apiece.
North Texas travels to Arlington, Texas, for its next match of the UNT-UTA Invitational as it meets Northwestern State at 1 p.m. from College Park Center.
