Tennis Kicks Off Fall Season with Strong Showing at Diving Eagle Invite

DENTON, Texas - The UNT tennis team started the fall season with a bang over the weekend at the Diving Eagle Invite, winning both the singles and doubles Draw A titles and posting a 17-6 overall record in singles play and a 6-2 record in doubles action.

In singles play, Carolina Laydner swept through the A Draw without dropping a set and knocked off teammate Lou Chalard 7-5, 7-5 in the championship match to take home the title.

In doubles action, the combination of Lou Chalard and Lilly Schultz won three straight matches in Draw A, including a 6-2 win over teammates Carolina Laydner and Marina Adati in the championship match to win the doubles championship for the Mean Green.

Elsewhere in the competition, Pia Petelinsek started her UNT career off strong in Draw C where she advanced to the championship match with a pair of strong wins in the first day of competition on Friday with victories over opponents from Oral Roberts and Northwestern State.

Chalard, who fell to Laydner in the title match at Draw A, advanced to the championship in sweeping fashion with straight sets wins over opponents from Northwestern State and UT Arlington.

Also in singles action, Marina Adati, Lilly Schultz and Giuliana Ciangherotti all picked up victories in their first match of the competition on Friday but fell in their second contest to earn a spot in their respective third-place matches in their brackets. Ciangherotti would come through in her third place match at Draw C with a thrilling 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3 win.

In doubles action, the duo of Laydner and Adati were dominant through their first two matches in Draw A 6-0 and 6-1, respectively to advance to Saturday's title contest against their fellow Mean Green teammates.

In draw B doubles competition, the freshman duo of Ciangherotti and Petelinsek teamed up for a strong 7-5 win over opponents from Tyler JC to advance to the championship match before falling narrowly 6-4.
