Freshman Tennis Duo Wins Flight Three Doubles Title to Highlight Strong Play at Rice Invite

HOUSTON – The UNT tennis team had another strong showing, highlighted by a doubles championship by the true freshman duo of Pia Petelinsek and Giulianna Ciangherotii at line three, this weekend in at the Rice Invitational.

The combination of Petelinsek and Ciangherotti took down a pair of opponents 6-2 and 6-4 in the first day of competition on Friday. They then knocked off SMU's combo of Garza/Stasny 6-2 Saturday to take home the title.

Overall, UNT finished the competition 12-8, going 7-5 in singles play and 5-3 in doubles action.

Elsewhere in the invite, Carolina Laydner had a strong performance in singles action, advancing to Sunday's championship match at Flight 2. She knocked off her first opponent from UTRGV 6-1, 6-2 and dispatched of Saturday's opponent from Houston 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 before narrowly falling in the title bout against SMU.

The Mean Green had a strong performance on Friday going 4-0 in singles matches and 3-1 in doubles.

Marina Adati and Petelinsek saw their singles matches look nearly identical over the weekend at lines four and five, respectively. Both players won their first round matchups in three sets, dropped their match on Saturday and bounced back with a win in their consolation matches Sunday.

Also this weekend, Stadfany Nformi competed in the ITA All-American Championships for the second consecutive year.

Nformi dropped her first match of pre-qualifying, but was able to rebound with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over reigning Big Ten Player of the Week Brianna Baldi of Penn State on Sunday to close her competition.
