DENTON – UNT volleyball collected a 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20) American Conference victory over UAB on Sunday afternoon at the UNT Volleyball Center.
"I'm proud of the way [the team] responded," head coach Dave Fleming said. "UAB scared me on video, just with all the physicality in their arms. So, I'm really proud of how we responded, especially after kind of taking it on the chin on Friday."
The Mean Green (11-3, 1-1) bounced back from Friday's loss against Charlotte to defeat the Blazers (7-7, 0-2) in four sets. Sophomore Lilly Croshaw led the match with a career high 14 kills while Alexa Washington finished with nine kills, 19 assists, two aces, eight digs and four blocks.
"We love playing at home," Croshaw said. "I feel like it's definitely a home court advantage for us. We get to practice and play in our gym, and then with the crowd, it helps us out a lot."
The Blazers held the Mean Green within striking distance for the majority of the first set before the home team overwhelmed the visitors with a 5-1 run to close out the frame, including a block assist and set-winning kill from middle blocker Loredana Fouonji.
In the opening moments of the second, the two sides traded blows before North Texas exploded for an 11-2 run for a commanding 18-10 lead. Outside hitter Reagan Bedell collected three kills during the spell and closed the set with six kills on eight attacks including the set winner.
UAB opened the third set with a five-point run before it bookended the frame with a six-point spell to claim its first set of the day.
UNT collected five of its eight service aces in the fourth set, led by freshman Sidney Soria with two. Soria operated as the primary setter in the frame as she collected five assists while Washington tallied three kills at opposite hitter.
"The close games are always … more fun," Washington said. "It's nice to sweep people or win by 10, but these games are so much more fun because you're competing, and you really have to work for it."
The Mean Green travel to Florida Atlantic (10-5, 1-1) on Friday at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN+ from Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
