The sophomore guard scored 15 points to lead UNT
NEW ORLEANS – The UNT women's basketball team took down Tulane 59-53 in Avron B. Fogelman Arena for the first time in program history Saturday afternoon.
The Mean Green had been unsuccessful in the five previous meetings in the building, but a hot shooting performance in the first half gave them an early lead they never relinquished. North Texas shot 48% in the first half, led by Aysia Proctor who had all 12 of her points in the first half.
The second half was not as efficient for the Mean Green, mustering just 19 points in the half after scoring 20 points in each of the first two quarters. Tulane made runs at the start of the third and fourth quarters, cutting North Texas' lead to single-digits both times.
With the lead trimmed to 54-51, Chania Price stepped up to the line and delivered a pair of clutch free throws. After a Tulane basket, she went to the line again and made one-of-two attempts to stretch UNT's lead to 57-53. The North Texas defense stepped up and got a stop before Jazzy Owens-Barnett knocked down two more free throws to seal the victory and move the Mean Green to 9-7 on the year and 3-1 in American Conference play.
"We got off to a great start and that was a big key for us," head coach Jason Burton said. "We reflected on last year and it was the opposite where we started slow and had to fight our way back to give us a chance to win at the end. I loved how we came out in the first half and scored 40 while holding them to 25. I thought our confidence and lack of aggression caused too many lulls in the second half, but we found a way to win."
Price led UNT with 15 points, posting a career high for the second straight game after scoring 12 against East Carolina on Tuesday. Megan Nestor also reached double figures as she finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds in her third consecutive double double and eighth of the season.
"My mentality going into games is just to keep stacking plays and keep stacking wins," Price said. "It's not something that's coming easy because I have to constantly think about continuing to score and be aggressive."
The Mean Green will host a pair of games next week beginning with Memphis coming to town on Tuesday with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m. CT from the Super Pit.
