Mean Green freshman wins pair of singles matches in weekend matches against P4 competition
FORT WORTH – The UNT tennis program kicked off its spring season Friday and Saturday with a strong performance by freshman Pia Petelinsek at the JAE Foundation Battle for the Boot Spring Kickoff hosted by TCU.
Petelinsek posted a perfect 2-0 singles record with a pair of wins over opponents from Michigan State which represented two of a total of four singles victories for the Mean Green over the two-day tournament against TCU and MSU.
The Mean Green also picked up a pair of doubles wins on the weekend with Carolina Laydner and newcomer Ujin Batsukh picking up a victory on day one and Lilly Schultz and Lou Chalard grabbing a win on day two.
Elsewhere in singles play, Chalard had a victory over an MSU opponent on day one and freshman Giulianna Ciangherotti winning on day two.
Petelinsek's two singles victories were over Sarah Fazlagic 6-2, 6-1 on the first day of competition and in a thriller against Oriana Parkins-Godwin 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.
On day one, Laydner and Batsukh defeated Fazlagic and Parkins-Godwin 6-1 in doubles play while Chalard knocked off Parkins-Godwin in singles competition 6-2, 6-1.
The second day of competition featured Schultz and Chalard taking down TCU's line two doubles pairing of Gay and Salkova 6-4 and Ciangherotti knocking off Fazlagic 6-1, 6-1.
The tournament was the final non-dual competition of the season for the Mean Green as they will now open their dual season on Jan. 23 with a doubleheader against Houston and Incarnate Word.
Admission to each home tennis event at the Waranch Tennis Complex is free and open to the public.
