HUMBLE, Texas – In its first competition since October, the UNT women's golf team opened the spring with a one-stroke dual victory over Houston Christian at the Golf Club of Houston on Sunday.
Freshman Marin Fujiyasu led the charge for the Mean Green as she shot even over the two rounds. Junior Bouquet Subsomboon competed as an individual on Sunday but shot a -5 over the two rounds to lead the way for her side.
"We accomplished the point of the match," said North Texas head coach Michael Akers. "Getting a win was good, we knocked the winter rust off and we're able to get two rounds in on Houston's tournament course. I'm thrilled how Marin (Fujiyasu) showed up after the break. She looks great and Bouquet (Subsomboon) played today like she is capable. That was also great to see. The ladies are inspired to work hard and try to qualify for Puerto Rico."
Sunday's win over the Huskies comes following a successful fall for UNT where they had two top three finishes in tournaments and got great individual performances from a variety of players. The Mean Green enter the spring positioned on the cusp of an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
North Texas finished second at the Sam Golden Invitational in September and came in third at the Bear Brawl in October.
Subsomboon finished second at the Sam Golden Invitational on the player's leaderboard. In October senior Malisone Chanthapanya also had a second place finish this time at the Jim West Challenge. She did so by breaking the program record for lowest single round ever. Senior Mason Lewis came in third at the Bear Brawl and freshman Victoria Georgieva shot a 66 on the third round of the Sam Golden Invitational, which led the round.
Sunday it was Fujiyasu's turn to shine as she led the Mean Green to victory.
Next up for North Texas is a trip to Puerto Rico on Feb. 1 for the prestigious annual Purdue Classic where they will compete against some of the top ranked teams in the country and aim to further make strides forward.
