Laydner’s Late Rally Comes up Short as Tennis Falls to Rice

MCKINNEY, Texas – The UNT tennis team dropped a 6-0 decision against Rice Friday in its second match of the season.
The match, which was moved indoors to McKinney Tennis Courts due to poor weather, dropped the Mean Green to 0-2 on the young season while the Owls improved to 3-1.
At line one, Carolina Laydner put up a strong battle against Rice's Darya Schwartzman who finished the fall season ranked inside the top 125 players in Division One. Laydner dropped the opening set 6-3 but bounced back for a thrilling 7-6 (7-4) tiebreak win in the second set. The decisive third set saw yet another tiebreaker, with Schwartzman taking home a 7-6 (7-4) win.
To start the match, Rice took home a 6-0 win at line one and a 6-2 victory at line three in doubles to take a 1-0 lead.
The Owls then won in straight sets at lines 2-5 to win the match 6-0.
The Mean Green will be back in action Sunday when they take on UIW and Northwestern State in a doubleheader. The time and location of Sunday's matches will be determined at a later date due to poor weather. Stay tuned to @MeanGreenTennis on social media for updates.
