Mean Green knock off NW State 6-1 and sweep UIW 7-0 in the doubleheader
DENTON, Texas – The UNT tennis program had a stellar day on the courts Sunday with a 6-1 victory over Northwestern State followed by a 7-0 sweep of UIW in the second match to earn its first two wins of 2026.
The Mean Green improved to 2-2 overall with a dominant effort in the doubleheader. UNT produced a 15-1 overall record on the day with a perfect 4-0 mark in doubles and an 11-1 record in singles. Of the 11 singles victories, 10 came in straight sets.
"Today was a great day," head coach Amanda Stone said. "We've really tested ourselves early this season opening with three A5 and a top 40 team. I'm proud of how hard we've fought and today that played off big time. We weren't just the best team today; we were the toughest. That's what it's going to take this season, a lot of grit and heart."
In the first match of the day, the Mean Green were dominant against the Devils, highlighted by straight set singles wins from Carolina Laydner at line one and Pia Petelinsek at line two.
Laydner was flawless in a 6-0, 6-0 victory on the top line while Petelinsek earned her first career victory 6-2, 6-1 just one line behind her.
In doubles action, the combination of Lou Chalard and Lilly Schultz won 6-2 at line one while Marina Adati and Laydner picked up a win via walkover due to the Devils being unable to field a line three doubles team.
Also in singles play, Adati, freshmen Giulianna Ciangherotti and Ujin Batsukh all won via walkover to give the Mean Green the 6-1 team victory.
In the second matchup against UIW, the Mean Green again won the doubles point thanks to the same doubles teams of Chalard and Schultz (line one) and Adati and Laydner (line two) winning 6-3 and 6-1, respectively.
UNT was then dominant in singles action, winning all six lines with five victories in straight sets.
Against the Cardinals, Laydner and Petelinsek both won their second straight match of the day in straight sets with Laydner winning line two 6-3, 6-2 and Petelinsek grabbing a 6-4, 6-4 victory at line three.
On the top line, Chalard competed in singles for the first time in the doubleheader and grabbed a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Adati and Ciangherotti also both won in straight sets at lines five and six, respectively. Adati grabbed a 6-4, 6-1 win while Ciangherotti won 6-1, 6-1.
The most thrilling match of the day belonged to Schultz at line four who needed a tiebreak third set to pull out a comeback victory. After dropping the first set 7-5, Schultz bounced back to win the second set 6-2 and the tiebreak 11-9.
